BEST solution for a hideway head unit for MINI
DSX-GS80 21/04/2020 (EE.UU)
I own a 2011 MINI Countryman s All4, with the Harman Kardon premium system. There are many custom audio install challenges with this year/model vehicle. A daunting amount. First, there are no head unit installation kit available for this car. None. I am stuck with the very unique factory molded stock head unit that is manufactured for the car. The CD tray is located in its own independent spot under the big pie plate sized center speedometer, and the audio controls are molded within the pie plate sized assembly. Second, the audio controls are very basic, bass and treble EQ only (no mid), very low power volume output overall compared to other stock systems and no sub woofer line out (which is expected in any stock system). Third, the circuitry of the Harman Kardon is very specific and can't be modified in a way that would make replacing the speakers or other components sound good as the built in amp is pre-tuned for the stock system sound. These are some of the very discouraging roadblocks that I faced with this car but I was NOT going to let it defeat me. Sound is VERY important for my primary summer vehicles and this MINI would not be an exception. Last year, I added two JL shallow mount subs that hid nicely in the back storage space area, as well as a Rockford Fosgate 1200 watt Prime amp. As mentioned above, there is no sub line out available in the MINI's stock system which forced me to have to get install an Audio Control line out converter and had to jump off an all rage signal to provide me the low end signal to the R.F. amp. That's all well and good for a temporary solution but I prefer a dedicated sub out because when you jump off an all range signal, if you change any frequency parameters off the stock head unit, it will effect the signal that is being sent to the line out converter that then effects the bass sound. It's a constant back and forth battle. The mystery of what to do next to take full control of my car audio expectations came like an angel from God when I saw on the Sony website that the Sony DSX-GS80 was being released this year in 2020 and it was specifically tailored for the wireless user via the Music Center app to literally control everything that you normally can adjust on the physical head unit itself. This had to be the answer for a "hide-away" system to be installed hidden within my MINI. Without much education on the app, I took the chance and ordered the DSX-GS80 and today was the day it got installed along with all new Kicker KS Series all-range 4 inch speakers and 4 tweeters, and 400 watt Rockford Fosgate motorcycle sized amp. Just to make sure I would be able to use the head unit completely hands free and only use the app, the installers hooked it up to a power supply on the work bench and we tried the Music Center app along with the Advanced Audio plug in, and holy heck it was everything I hoped it would be. I can choose "source" (USB 1 and 2, Radio, Sirius, Music etc.), I have a 10 band EQ that allows me to adjust my frequencies the way *I* want across the spectrum, and I can adjust the sub levels from the sub line out signal (no more need for the line out converter!) to the 1200 watt amp. I have control of EVERYTHING via the Music Center app. My MINI now sounds like how I wanted it to sound; Slammin' & Beautiful. The DSX-GS80 and all-range amp were able to be installed and hidden inside the real drivers side quarter panel area of the MINI where the original stock amp was (now removed). Without the Sony DSX-GS80 falling into my lap at the perfect time, I may still be looking for a solution. I am VERY happy with this new product and eventually I will make an in-depth video showing how the DSX-GS80 and the Music Center app work together (Since as of right now there is none to be found.)
